Election Information

  • Elections are held as scheduled by the Office of the Secretary of State. The Clerk of Court encourages residents of Ascension Parish to serve as Election Commissioners at the various voting precincts.Interested persons must attend one evening session to become certified as a Commissioner. Schools for new Commissioners are generally held twice a year. An Election Commissioner shall receive $200.00 for each election in which he/she serves.
  • A person interested in becoming a certified Commissioner must possess the following qualifications:

    1. Be a qualified voter of  Ascension Parish who is not entitled to assistance in voting.
    2. Not have been convicted of an election offense.
  • A person interested in becoming a Commissioner-in-Charge must posses the same qualifications as a Commissioner and also shall have successfully completed a general course of instruction for  Commissioner-in-Charge and shall have served as a  Commissioner in at least two elections during the last four years. Commissioner-in-Charge school is held once a year during the period beginning August 1st through the end of December. A Commissioner-in-Charge shall receive $250.00 for each election in which he serves.

 CLOSED PARTY PRIMARY INFORMATION

Ascension Parish Voters, please take note of the upcoming election dates for Closed Party Primaries:

  • May 16th - First Party Primary
  • June 27th - Second Party Primary (if necessary)

These elections will include Congressional races for US Senate and US House of Representatives.

How do Closed Party Primaries work?

  • Only Democratic candidates will run in the Democratic first party primary election.
  • Only Republican candidates will run int he Republican first party primary election.

Who can vote in the party primary elections?

Registered Democrats may vote for Democratic Party candidates.
  • Registered Republicans may vote for Republican Party candidates.
  • Registered No Party voters may choose which party's primary they would like to vote in.

  • No party voters are not required to participate in the closed party primary
  • If you are registered as No Party, the election commissioner will ask you to complete a Declaration of Ballot Choice to determine which ballot to provide to you.
  • If you are registered with any other party affiliation, you cannot participate in the closed party primary election.  However, you will still receive a ballot for any other races or propositions you are eligible to vote on (if applicable).

GENERAL ELECTION - November 3rd

The General Election to be held on November 3rd is an open election, meaning that all eligible voters may vote for any candidate of their choice, regardless of party affiliation.

Registration deadlines:

  • 30 days before Election Day for in-person or mail applications.
  • 20 days before Election Day for online applications.
